As Barbados and the world ushers in a new year, the Breastfeeding and Child Nutrition Foundation (BCNF) is reaffirming its dedication to empowering families and improving maternal and child health across the island. Founded in 2015, the BCNF has consistently championed breastfeeding, early childhood nutrition, and the prevention of childhood obesity.
Dr. Alison Bernard, co-founder of the BCNF, expressed optimism for the year ahead. “In 2025, our mission remains clear: to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding and optimal child nutrition. We are building a healthier future for Barbados, one family at a time. This year, we’re excited to expand our reach and deepen our impact within communities,” she said.
The BCNF plans to launch new initiatives in 2025, including a series of community workshops aimed at educating families about breastfeeding techniques, complementary feeding, and the long-term benefits of balanced nutrition. The foundation is also enhancing its school outreach program, advocating for healthier school meal options and greater awareness of the importance of childhood nutrition.
“The early years of a child’s life are critical,” Dr. Bernard emphasized. “Our programs are designed to provide parents and caregivers with the tools they need to make informed choices, ensuring their children grow up healthy and strong.”

The BCNF continues to champion the rights of breastfeeding mothers, advocating for policies that create a supportive environment both in the workplace and in public spaces. In addition, the foundation is expanding its peer support network, enabling mothers to connect, share experiences, and find encouragement.
“Breastfeeding can be challenging, especially for new mothers,” said BCNF Admin Manager Lisa Rowe. “Our Breastfeeding Support Group (BSG), with over 200 members strong, is vital in creating a sense of community, letting mothers know they are not alone in their journey.”
As the BCNF enters another year of advocacy, Dr. Bernard called on Barbadians to join the foundation’s efforts. “We cannot do this alone,” she said. “Whether it’s through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word about the importance of breastfeeding and child nutrition, every contribution makes a difference.”
The BCNF invites families, healthcare providers, and community leaders to collaborate in its mission to create a healthier Barbados.
“Together, we can make 2025 a year of growth, health, and hope for every family in Barbados,” Dr. Bernard concluded.
