Fifty nursing mothers and their families are set to receive vital support through the launch of the Baby Bundle Kit Project, an initiative of the Breastfeeding and Child Nutrition Foundation (BCNF) made possible by a $20,000 donation from the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust (SLCT).
The project, officially presented yesterday at the Barbados Family Planning Association in Harmony Hall, St. Michael, will provide Breastfeeding Support Bundles containing essential tools such as breast pumps, breast pads, and creams to low-resourced and vulnerable mothers, including those with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
BCNF co-founder Dr. Alison Bernard said the initiative reflects the organisation’s mission to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding and optimal early childhood nutrition.
“Each selected mother will receive a carefully designed bundle containing essential breastfeeding support tools,” Dr. Bernard explained. “But it’s not just about the kit. We also provide targeted education through workshop settings, giving mothers the knowledge and confidence to breastfeed successfully. We’ll be using monitoring and evaluation to track the impact, not only to demonstrate the difference we’ve made to these mothers and their families, but also to guide and strengthen future programmes.”

The launch coincided with the observance of Breastfeeding Month, held each August to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and promote stronger support systems for breastfeeding families.
Trustee of the SLCT, Mrs. Pippa Challis, shared her personal connection to the project.
“Improving a child’s health by providing all the nutrients and natural antibodies needed is a big part of breastfeeding,” Challis said. “As a full-time working mother, I remember many hours of pumping milk at 5 a.m. before heading to work, and it’s not easy. What better way of celebrating motherhood and childhood than making a donation like this? We’re thrilled to be here today and to support families who can now save money and spend on other essentials.”
Representatives from the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ Public Health Nursing Team, the Rotary Club of Barbados, the Barbados Family Planning Association, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital attended the launch in support of the project.
